Activation of ESET Home Security Premium 1 device
This guide applies exclusively to the activation of the ESET Home Security Premium package for 1 device. It does not describe the installation process. Most importantly: activation requires a correct key and internet access, and the product should display the status of an active subscription after activation.
What you activate the product with
ESET uses an activation key in a format similar to:
XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
Enter the key exactly as it was sent: with hyphens, without additional spaces, best using the copy-paste method. An incorrect format is one of the most common reasons for activation rejection.
Activation with the product key
Method 1: GUI in the ESET program
This is the basic and official method for the home version.
- Open the main window of the ESET program.
- Go to Help and Support.
- Click Activate subscription.
- Select Use a purchased activation key.
- Paste the key.
- Click Continue, then Activate.
- After successful activation, click Done.
If the program was previously activated with a different subscription, use the path:
Help and Support > Change subscription
This is the correct way to reactivate or replace the key after renewal.
Method 2: from the CMD level
In the home version of ESET, there is no officially documented command like slmgr or ospp that activates the product with just the key without an interface. In practice, CMD can be used to run the program and diagnose activation, and you still enter the key in the ESET window.
Run the command line and enter:
"C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Security\egui.exe"
If the system is 64-bit and the path is different, also check:
"%ProgramFiles%\ESET\ESET Security\egui.exe"
After opening the program, go to:
Help and Support > Activate subscription
This is the most honest form of the "CMD method" for the home edition: the console opens the application, but the activation itself takes place in the GUI.
Method 3: by phone
If the key does not pass, the subscription is occupied by an old device, or you are not sure if the code was correctly issued, contact support:

- the activation key,
- the email address used for the purchase,
- the product name: ESET Home Security Premium 1 device,
- information on whether it's a new activation or reactivation after changing equipment.

Verification from the command level
ESET Home Security Premium for Windows does not provide an official consumer CLI command to read the activation status. However, you can precisely check if the environment allows activation and contact with ESET servers.
Run cmd as an administrator and execute:
nslookup edf.eset.com
ping edf.eset.com
If activation returns ACT/ECP errors, perform a network stack reset:
netsh winsock reset
After restarting the computer, repeat the activation and check the status again in:

Troubleshooting Activation
Below are real errors encountered during ESET activation.
ACT.0
General activation error. Most often, it means a problem requiring contact with technical support. If it appears constantly despite a correct key, call:

ACT.1
Activation was accepted, but something went wrong on the product side. Usually, re-activating after updating the program to the latest version helps.
ACT.15
The product cannot be activated with the given key because the workstation is still assigned elsewhere. Solution: log in to ESET HOME, manually disconnect the old device, and reactivate.
ACT.17
Subscription cancelled. Check if you are using the latest key after renewal or extension. If everything matches, verification with ESET support is needed.

Older activation error. Re-entering activation data or clearing the update cache helps.
0015
The key has expired or the system considers it invalid. Check the subscription expiration date and whether the renewal has been processed.
0097
The key is intended for a different product. This is a common case after purchasing the wrong variant or attempting to activate an inappropriate edition.
“Activation failed – Overused subscription”
This does not always have a separate code but is very common. It means exceeding the number of devices. For a 1-device license, you need to disconnect the previous computer from ESET HOME.
What to Do When the Key Does Not Work
First, check four things:
- if the key format is correct,
- if there are no spaces before or after the key,
- if the key has not expired,
- if you downloaded the correct product for this subscription.
If the problem persists:
- Recover your subscription data to the email address assigned to the purchase.
- Verify that the key is not already in use on another device.
- Check the connection to

Reactivation After Hardware Change
With a 1-device license, changing the computer or replacing the motherboard very often requires releasing the previous workstation.
The safest procedure:
- Log in to ESET HOME.
- Find the old device assigned to the subscription.
- Remove or disconnect the device from the subscription.
- On the new computer, run ESET.
- Go to Help and Support > Activate Subscription.
- Enter the same key again.
