Microsoft 365 Personal Activation Guide
Microsoft 365 Personal can be activated legally only through a Microsoft account and its assigned subscription or product key. Below, you will find a complete set of verification and activation methods, including through the graphical interface, command-line tools, and phone contact with Microsoft support.
Requirements Before Activation
Before starting, prepare:
- a Microsoft account to which the subscription will be assigned,
- a 25-character product key if provided separately,
- an internet connection,
- the Word, Excel, or another Microsoft 365 application installed.
Microsoft 365 Personal is a subscription assigned to an account. Simply entering the key is not enough if the product has not been properly linked to the Microsoft account.
Method 1: Activation Through the Graphical Interface
This is the primary and recommended method.
- Go to the
https://setup.office.com/website. - Log in to your Microsoft account.
- Enter the product key if the system requests it.
- Confirm your country and language.
- After assigning the license, download and install Microsoft 365.
- Launch Word or Excel.
- Log in with the same Microsoft account to which the subscription was assigned.
- If an activation message appears, select
ActivateorLog in.
Activation from Within the Office Application
If the suite is already installed:
- Open Word.
- Go to
File→Account. - Check the product section.
- If you see the option
Log in to activate, click it. - After logging in, the status should change to an activated product or an active Microsoft 365 subscription.
Method 2: Verification and Support Using ospp.vbs via CMD
The ospp.vbs tool is used to check the activation status of locally installed Office applications. For Microsoft 365 Personal, it is most often used for diagnostics, rather than classic key activation as in volume licensing editions.
Run the Command Prompt as an administrator and navigate to the Office directory.
For a 64-bit system, most commonly:
cd /d "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16"
For a 32-bit installation on a 64-bit system:
cd /d "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16"
Basic ospp.vbs Commands
Check license status:
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus
Detailed activation information:
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatusall
Attempt to activate the installed product:
cscript ospp.vbs /act
If the package is correctly associated with the Microsoft account, the command may confirm activation or return an error indicating that logging in to the application is required.
Method 3: slmgr.vbs in CMD
slmgr.vbs does not activate Microsoft 365 Personal. This tool is used to manage Windows activation. In this guide, it's worth treating it as auxiliary when you want to check if the Office issue doesn't stem from the overall licensing state of the system.
Example commands:
slmgr /xpr
Shows if Windows is permanently activated.
slmgr /dlv
Displays detailed license information for the system.
If Windows is activation-unstable or the computer has a wrong time, service, or proxy configuration, it may indirectly hinder the activation of Microsoft 365 applications.

Before the call, prepare:
- your Microsoft account,
- the product key,
- the email address used for activation,
- information on whether the subscription was previously assigned to another account,
- a screenshot or the exact error code.
Phone support is particularly useful when:
- the key has already been used,
- the subscription does not appear on the account,
- there is a region or payment conflict,
- the installation was transferred between devices.
Activation Verification
You can check the activation status in several ways.
In the Office Application
File → Account
Look for messages:
Microsoft 365 Personal subscriptionProduct activatedSigned in as ...
In CMD
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus
On the Microsoft Account
Log in to:
https://account.microsoft.com/services
If the subscription is active, you will see Microsoft 365 Personal, the renewal date, and available installations.
Most Common Activation Errors
1. 0xC004F074
Problem with the activation service or communication. Most often, restarting the computer, correcting the date and time, and logging in to the Office application helps.
2. 0xC004C008
The key has been used too many times or was previously assigned to another Microsoft account.
3. 0x80070005
Lack of required permissions. Run the application or CMD as an administrator and check the security software.
4. UNLICENSED PRODUCT
The application is installed, but the user is not logged in with the correct account or the subscription has expired.
5. We can't verify your subscription right now
Problem with the internet connection, Microsoft servers, or account synchronization.
6. This product key has already been redeemed
The key has already been assigned to a Microsoft account. Log in to the correct account instead of entering the key again.
7. Activation required despite an active subscription
Log out of Office, close all applications, restart the computer, and log in again with the same account.
Additional Note on Antivirus
If an antivirus program is included with the purchase, do not activate it through Office or Microsoft 365. Activate it only on the manufacturer's website, following the provider's instructions.
Good Practices
- use one, correct Microsoft account,
- do not mix personal and business accounts,
- check the correctness of the date, time, and time zone,
- update Office before retrying activation,
- save error codes before contacting support.
