FAQ: Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Datacenter

1. Is the key for Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Datacenter original?

Yes, the original licence key is a legal activation code intended to activate a Microsoft product in accordance with the terms of the given licence. For the customer, the most important thing is to receive the correct key, purchase document, and clear information about the type of licence being purchased: OEM, Retail, or Volume. In practice, legality does not depend on the appearance of the code itself, but on its origin, compliance with the offer, and the possibility of activation in the manner provided by Microsoft.

2. How many computers or servers does one licence work for?

One activation licence typically applies to one server, not any number of devices. In the case of Windows Server, it is necessary to distinguish between system activation and core licensing and user access rules. Activation itself does not yet mean the right to install on multiple machines. If a company plans to deploy on several physical servers or multiple virtual machines, it is necessary to choose the appropriate number of licences in accordance with the Microsoft model.

3. Is Windows Server 2019 Datacenter a perpetual licence?

Yes, it is a perpetual licence, meaning it is non-expiring. This means that after proper activation, you can use the product without subscription fees for the right to use this version. However, it should be remembered that the perpetuity of the licence does not mean perpetual support from the manufacturer. Microsoft ended mainstream support on 9 January 2024, and extended support for Windows Server 2019 lasts until 9 January 2029.

4. Can I transfer the licence to another server?

It depends on the type of licence. The Retail licence is usually the most flexible and, under certain conditions, can be transferred to another device. The OEM licence is, in principle, assigned to the first hardware on which it was activated, so its transfer is limited or not allowed. In the case of Volume licences, the conditions assigned to a specific volume licensing programme apply. Before purchasing, it is worth checking not only the price but also the possibility of future migration.

5. What editions of Windows Server 2019 are available?

In the Windows Server 2019 line, the main editions are Essentials, Standard, and Datacenter. The Datacenter edition is primarily intended for professional environments, virtualisation, data centres, and more advanced server scenarios. Standard is suitable for smaller and medium-sized deployments, while Essentials was targeted at the smallest organisations. If broad scalability and advanced virtualisation are required, Datacenter is usually chosen.

6. Does this system work on Windows 10, Windows 11, or Mac?

No, Windows Server 2019 Datacenter is not intended for activation of Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS systems. This is a separate server operating system, installed on a physical server or in a virtual machine as a server operating system. It should not be confused with a licence for a desktop system. If you need a system for a home or office computer, you should choose the appropriate version of Windows for the workstation.

7. Can installation and activation be done offline?

Yes, in many cases, offline installation is possible, i.e., without a constant internet connection, as long as you have an ISO medium or a prepared installer. The activation itself depends on the type of key and the method intended for the given license. Some activations take place online, and in selected cases, telephone activation is also possible. It's worth remembering that this applies to the operating system. If you're buying antivirus software, activation is usually performed through the manufacturer's website, not through the Windows Server activation mechanism.

8. What to do if the key doesn't work?

First, you need to check if the correct edition of the system is being installed, because a key for Datacenter won't activate another version. Next, it's worth ensuring that the code was entered correctly and that the system wasn't previously activated by another method. If the problem still occurs, you should contact the seller and prepare an error dump or an exact error message. Reliable support should help with verifying the key, edition compatibility, and further activation procedures.

9. Until when does Microsoft support Windows Server 2019?

Windows Server 2019 is covered by Microsoft's standard lifecycle policy. Basic support ended on 9 January 2024, while extended support applies until 9 January 2029. After this date, the system will no longer receive security updates in the standard support cycle. For companies, this means that they can still legally use the system, but it's worth planning a future migration accordingly and in advance.

10. Will I receive an invoice for my purchase?

In the legal sale of software, the customer should receive a purchase document, usually a VAT invoice or an equivalent sales proof, depending on the seller's form of business. This is important not only for accounting purposes but also in case of an audit and later verification of the license's origin. It's a good idea to store the purchase document along with the message containing the key and the license type description.

11. What is the key delivery time?

For electronic licenses, delivery usually takes place digitally, most often via email, which is why the processing time is significantly shorter than for boxed versions. The specific speed depends on the store's offer, the working hours of the support team, and any manual verification of the order. Before making a purchase, it's best to check the information provided on the product page, as it determines the real delivery time for a given order.

12. How do OEM, Retail, Volume differ, and what are CAL?

OEM, Retail, and Volume are different licensing models. OEM is usually tied to the first device, Retail offers greater flexibility, and Volume applies to collective licensing in organizations. A separate issue is CAL, or Client Access Licenses. CAL is not a program or a file to be installed. It's a licensing document confirming the user's or device's right to access server services. Therefore, CAL should be treated as a legal entitlement, not as separate software to be downloaded and activated.
