How to install Microsoft Office 2016 Professional — complete instructions

Downloading the installer

The Office 2016 installer is best downloaded from the official Microsoft source. If the key has not been assigned to an account yet, you need to go to the Office setup page and associate the product with your Microsoft account. Step-by-step installation

1. Prepare the system

Close all Office applications. If you have an older or test version of Microsoft 365, Office 2019, or Office 2021 installed, uninstall it before starting.

2. Run the installer

Click on the downloaded installation file and accept the User Account Control message. The installer will download any missing components and start installing the suite.

3. Wait for completion

After a few minutes, a message will appear indicating that the installation is complete. Then, run Word or Excel, for example.

4. Accept the licence

When you start the application for the first time, confirm the licence terms and log in if the installer asks you to.

Activation from the programme level

Open Word or Excel, go to File > Account > Activate product and enter the 25-character key. If online activation does not succeed automatically, you can use phone activation.

For Office products, the ospp.vbs script is used with the /inpkey and /act parameters.

Phone activation

If the online server rejects activation, select phone activation and call 00 800 121 1654. The consultant or automated system will ask for the installation ID and provide a confirmation ID.

Activation verification

The easiest way to check the status is in Word: File > Account. A message about the activated product should appear.

Verification in CMD:

cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus

If the activation was successful, you will see the licence status and the last characters of the installed key.

Troubleshooting

"This product key has already been used"

The key may have already been assigned to a Microsoft account. Log in to the correct account and download Office from the services section instead of entering the key again.

"We can't set up your account right now"

This is usually a temporary issue on the Microsoft services side or a conflict with the payment account. Wait a few minutes and try again.

"Error 0xC004F074 occurred"

This usually means a problem with the licence channel activation or an incorrectly chosen installation version. It's worth uninstalling the current edition and installing the correct version compatible with the key.

"Multiple Office versions detected in the system"

There are remnants of an older Office or Microsoft 365 on the computer. Uninstall all versions of the Office package, restart the computer, and install only one edition.

ospp.vbs is not recognised

Run CMD as an administrator and go to the correct Office16 folder. The problem usually results from using the wrong 32/64-bit path.

Online activation hangs or does not connect to the server

Check your internet connection, system date and time, and temporarily disable network filtering or corporate firewall. If necessary, use phone activation.
