How to install Microsoft Visio 2021 Standard — a complete guide

Before you start — what is Microsoft Visio 2021 Standard

Microsoft Visio 2021 Standard is a basic, perpetual version of the diagram creation software, used for creating diagrams, block diagrams, simple process maps, and basic technical visualisations. It is an edition for users who need classic drawing features and ready-made templates, but do not need the advanced capabilities of the Professional version.

Visio 2021 Click-to-Run should be in the same architecture as the Office package (64-bit ↔ 64-bit).

Downloading the installer

Office Deployment Tool (ODT)

Download ODT from the Microsoft website, unpack it to a folder, e.g. C:\ODT, and create a configuration.xml file:

Installation

In the ODT folder, run as administrator:

setup.exe /configure configuration.xml

The Click-to-Run installer will install Visio automatically. Before installation, make sure:

• there is no MSI / Click-to-Run conflict,
• the architecture is compatible with Office (32/64-bit),
• the account has administrator privileges.

Activating with a product key

Method 1: GUI

1. Run Visio.
2. File → Account → Change product key.
3. Enter the key and confirm.

Method 2: Command line

cd /d "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16"
cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
cscript ospp.vbs /act

For 32-bit version: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16.

Method 3: Phone activation

00 800 121 1654 — prepare the key and installation ID.

Verifying activation

cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus

This will show the licence type, activation status, and the last 5 characters of the key.

Troubleshooting

1. Conflict with another Office version

Uninstall the old MSI version or incompatible component, ensure consistent architecture.

2. 32-bit / 64-bit architecture error

Change OfficeClientEdition="64" to 32 in XML if Office is 32-bit.

3. setup.exe /download does not download anything

Check XML location, internet connection, and firewall. Run CMD as administrator.

4. Online activation error

Check the key, run ospp.vbs /dstatus. Phone activation: 00 800 121 1654.

5. ospp.vbs is not recognised

Go to the Office16 folder and run with the full path as administrator.

6. Visio in a different language

Ensure <Language ID="pl-pl" /> is in XML. Remove unnecessary Office languages.

7. The program asks for subscription login

Microsoft 365 remnants. Log out of the account, check ospp.vbs /dstatus, remove unnecessary M365 components.
