What is SharePoint Server 2019 Standard?

Installation

1. Run setup.exe
2. Accept the licence terms
3. Install the required components (prerequisites)
4. Run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard
5. Configure a new farm or join an existing one
6. Create a configuration database in SQL Server
7. Configure Central Administration

Prepare in Advance

• A service account in Active Directory
• An instance of SQL Server with permissions
• A port for Central Administration
• Windows updates

Activating the Server with a Key

Central Administration

Central Administration → System Settings → Convert License — enter the product key.

PowerShell

Set-SPFarmConfig -ProductKey XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Verification

Get-SPFarm | Select-Object BuildVersion

Also, check Central Administration to ensure it's not running as an evaluation edition.

SharePoint 2019 CAL Licences

User CAL vs Device CAL

• User CAL — assigned to a person, access from any number of devices
• Device CAL — assigned to a device, access for multiple users

Rule: User CAL when one person has multiple devices. Device CAL when one device is shared by multiple users.

CAL is NOT a Programme

CAL does not require installation, activation, or a key. It's a licence document confirming access rights.

• basic collaboration

How to Count CAL?

User CAL

Count unique users with access to SharePoint.

Device CAL

Count unique devices connecting to SharePoint.

Troubleshooting

1. Prerequisites error

Install Windows updates, use offline prerequisites installer if no internet connection is available.

2. Configuration Wizard ends with an error

Check service account permissions in SQL, SQL Server connectivity, ULS logs.

3. Product key error

The key must be for SharePoint Server 2019 Standard. Use Central Administration or Set-SPFarmConfig -ProductKey.

4. Server does not join the farm

Align patch level, confirm passphrase, check firewalls and DNS.

5. Search does not work

Check service status in Central Administration, service accounts, search topology, RAM/SQL resources.

6. Sites do not open

Check IIS, bindings, application pools, certificates, DNS entries.
