Error 0x8007232B: DNS name does not exist (KMS client)
This error occurs in: Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022.
Cause
The KMS client cannot find the KMS server's SRV records in DNS. The _vlmcs._tcp record may not exist or DNS may not be available.
Symptoms
- During activation, the message appears: "DNS name does not exist (KMS client)"
- Error code:
0x8007232B - English version: "DNS name does not exist"
Step-by-step solution
If you have a KMS server, check the SRV registration in DNS. If not, install a MAK key. Manual KMS specification: slmgr.vbs /skms <host_kms>.
Solution for Windows Server
- Open PowerShell as administrator
- Enter the key:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
- Activate:
slmgr /ato
- Check the status:
slmgr /xpr
Verification
After performing the steps, check if the activation was successful:
- Windows: Settings → System → Activation → should be "Windows is activated"
- Or:
slmgr /xprin the command line
Still not working?
If the above steps did not help:
- Check the date and time — they must be correct (an incorrect date can block activation)
- Temporarily disable antivirus and try again
- Check the internet connection — online activation requires a connection to Microsoft servers
