Error 0xC004F009: Grace Period Expired
This error occurs in: Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server.
Cause
The 30-day trial period (grace period) of the Windows system has expired without activation. Windows will enter a limited functionality mode.
Symptoms
- During activation, the message appears: "Grace period expired"
- Error code:
0xC004F009 - English version: "The Software Protection Service reported that the grace period expired"
Step-by-Step Solution
Activate the Windows system using a valid product key: Settings > Update and Security > Activation > Change product key. Alternatively, through the command line: slmgr.vbs /ipk <key>.
Solution for Windows Server
- Open PowerShell as administrator
- Enter the key:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
- Activate:
slmgr /ato
- Check the status:
slmgr /xpr
Verification
After performing the steps, check if the activation was successful:
- Windows: Settings → System → Activation → should be "Windows is activated"
- Alternatively:
slmgr /xprin the command line

- Check the date and time — they must be correct (an incorrect date can block activation)
- Temporarily disable antivirus and try again
