Error 0xC004F00F: Hardware ID exceeds the allowable tolerance level
This error occurs in: Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server.
Cause
Too many hardware components have been changed since the last activation. Microsoft allows a certain number of hardware changes, but replacing multiple components at the same time (e.g. motherboard + processor + RAM) can exceed the limit.
Symptoms
- During activation, the message appears: "Hardware ID exceeds the allowable tolerance level"
- Error code:
0xC004F00F - English version: "The hardware ID binding is beyond level of tolerance"
Step-by-step solution
Activate by phone or through Microsoft Support chat, providing proof of purchase. If you have a digital license linked to your Microsoft account, run the Activation Troubleshooter and sign in to your account.
Solution for Windows Server
- Open PowerShell as administrator
- Enter the key:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
- Activate:
slmgr /ato
- Check the status:
slmgr /xpr
Verification
After performing the steps, check if the activation was successful:
- Windows: Settings → System → Activation → should be "Windows is activated"
- Or:
slmgr /xprin the command line
Still not working?
If the above steps did not help:
- Check the date and time — they must be correct (an incorrect date can block activation)
- Temporarily disable antivirus and try again
- Check your internet connection — online activation requires a connection to Microsoft servers
