Activating Microsoft 365 Personal – a step-by-step guide

Microsoft 365 Personal is activated by assigning the product key to a Microsoft account and logging in to the Office package applications on the same account. This guide only covers activation, not installation.

How Microsoft 365 Personal activation works

For Microsoft 365 Personal, the product key is usually used to activate a subscription on a Microsoft account, rather than for classic, local activation like in older Office versions. After correctly assigning the key to the account, simply logging in to Word, Excel, or the Microsoft services website is enough for the license to be recognised.

If activation does not occur automatically, you can use graphical methods, command-line tools, and contact Microsoft support by phone.

Activating with a product key – all methods

1. Activation via the graphical interface

This is the primary and recommended method for Microsoft 365 Personal.

  1. Open the Microsoft activation page and log in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Enter the product key and confirm the subscription assignment to the account.
  3. Launch any Microsoft 365 application, such as Word.
  4. Go to File > Account.
  5. Log in to the same Microsoft account to which the key was assigned.
  6. Wait for the application to download the license status.

If you see information about an active Microsoft 365 Personal subscription in the account section, activation has been successful.

2. Activation using ospp.vbs in CMD

This method is useful for diagnosing licensing issues in Office packages with the ospp.vbs mechanism. In many cases, Microsoft 365 Personal still requires the key to be assigned to the account first, but the diagnostic commands are still very useful.

Run Command Prompt as administrator and navigate to the Office directory, usually:

cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office16"

On a 64-bit system with 32-bit Office, it may be:

cd /d "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office16"

Enter the key:

cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Force activation:

cscript ospp.vbs /act

This method makes sense mainly when the product supports local key acceptance through the Office licensing service. If you receive a message about an unsupported license type, return to activation via the Microsoft account.

3. Telephone activation

If online activation ends with an error, you can contact Microsoft support at:

Prepare:

  • the product key,
  • the Microsoft account email address,
  • information about where the key was purchased,
  • any error message with a code.

The consultant can verify the key status, region, license compatibility, and indicate the correct reactivation path.

Verifying activation

The most reliable method for Office is to check the license status using the dstatus command.

Navigate to the Office directory and run:

cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus

Look for entries such as:

  • LICENSE STATUS: ---LICENSED---
  • an active licensing channel,
  • a correctly recognised product.

Troubleshooting Activation

Below are the most common, real activation errors along with their practical implications.

Error 0xC004C060

The product key has been marked as invalid or deactivated. This often applies to keys from unauthorised distribution.

Error 0xC004C003

The activation server rejected the key. This may indicate a block, previous use inconsistent with licence terms, or an incorrect key type.

Error 0xC004F050

The entered key is incorrect. First, check for typos, and then verify the key's compatibility with the product.

Error 0xC004FC03

There is a problem with the connection to the activation server. Most often, disabling VPN, correcting the system date and time, and retrying on a different connection helps.

Error 0x80070005

Lack of required permissions. Run CMD as an administrator and ensure that Office licensing services are not blocked by system policies.

Error 0xC004F074

No contact with the activation service. In a home environment, this usually indicates an incorrect activation method or a problem with system service configuration.

"Unlicensed Product" or "Product Deactivated" Message

The package is installed, but the Microsoft account does not have a valid subscription assigned, or the application is logged in to the wrong account.

What to Do When the Key Does Not Work

  1. Check if you are entering the key exactly as it was provided.
  2. Ensure the key is for Microsoft 365 Personal, not another product.
  3. Log in to the correct Microsoft account and check if the subscription is assigned to it.
  4. Verify the purchase source. Keys from uncertain circulation may have been previously used or blocked.
  5. Run:
    cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus
    
    to check if the system sees any licence.
  6. Contact the seller and ask for a key exchange or confirmation of origin.
  7. If the problem persists, call Microsoft: 00 800 121 1654.

Reactivation After Hardware Change

Microsoft 365 Personal is primarily associated with the Microsoft account, so after changing a computer or hardware, you usually do not need to buy a new key.

In practice, perform:

  1. Log in to the same Microsoft account.
  2. Run the Microsoft 365 application.
  3. Check the File > Account section.
  4. If necessary, log out of previous devices in the Microsoft account panel and log in again.

If the subscription is not recognised after a hardware change, check the status with the command:
